Motor GZ 049/061

These engines are produced by the current successor to the Chinese CS engine concern, which was very active in the 1990’s producing a wide range of sport, racing and replica engines. After some restructuring, both CS engines and Raptorz model company are now part of the same cooperative organization.
As indicated in earlier parts of this series, the original CS 049 and 061 engines, whilst showing some promise and being amenable to tuning in the hands of such experts as Doug Galbreath, were let down by sometimes indifferent quality control, but mainly by excessive weight, the typical 90g weight being 40-50% heavier than most of the opposition.
A major redesign of the engine took place ca. 1999-2000, resulting in the GZ (Gao and Zhou) ‘pro’ version, incorporating many of the modifications suggested by tuners and major users of the original CS version.
The redesigned engine, whilst retaining a clear lineage to its CS progenitor, has an new investment cast crankcase, new head, set up for a Nelson plug as standard, and a new lightened piston assembly. The CS engines were always competitively priced, and the new GZ version lists at US $90, available in both FF (049N/061N) and speed (049S/061S) timings. Figs 4-5 show the GZ engine and its internals. Power is quoted as 0.35 BHP/30,000rpm for the 061N variant, which seems quite realistic, (Ref.4).
Weight is not stated, but it is known to be lighter than the CS version it replaces.
